Rethinking Focus: ADHD and Mental Health

Keywords: ADHD Awareness Month, adult ADHD, neurodiversity, executive functioning, therapy for ADHD

October is ADHD Awareness Month, and it’s long past time to widen the conversation. While ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
has traditionally been associated with hyperactive school-aged boys, the reality is far more complex—and far more common.

A New Look at an Old Diagnosis

At TheraHeal, we view ADHD through a holistic lens: not as a flaw in attention, but as a different way of experiencing the world.
This month, we’re spotlighting how ADHD affects mental health, relationships, self-image, and daily functioning—and how support can look radically different from person to person.

TheraHeal Insight:
ADHD isn’t about trying harder—it’s about understanding your brain and designing support that fits you.

What ADHD Really Feels Like

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts executive functioning—things like planning, memory, impulse control, and task switching.
It isn’t about willpower or laziness. It’s about how the brain organizes and prioritizes information.

  • Struggle with time blindness or chronic lateness
  • Have racing thoughts or trouble falling asleep
  • Feel paralyzed by decision-making or clutter
  • Experience emotional dysregulation or rejection sensitivity
  • Thrive in creativity, crisis, or high-pressure environments
  • Face intense shame over “not living up to potential”

Many people don’t get diagnosed until adulthood—especially women, people of color, and nonbinary folks,
whose symptoms are often overlooked or mischaracterized.

Did You Know?
Late diagnosis is common—especially among those who learned to “mask” their symptoms early in life.

ADHD and Mental Health

Living with undiagnosed or unsupported ADHD can take a major toll. Clients often come to therapy feeling:

  • Burned out from masking and overcompensating
  • Frustrated by forgetfulness or inconsistency
  • Ashamed of their “laziness” (which is actually executive dysfunction)
  • Isolated from people who “don’t get it”

This constant self-criticism can spiral into anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and even trauma responses.
But with the right support, new narratives—and new strategies—are possible.

Reclaiming Agency and Structure

Therapy for ADHD doesn’t just look like time-blocking and to-do lists (though those can help!).
It also means learning to honor your neurotype and build systems around it. That might include:

  • Exploring internalized shame and perfectionism
  • Naming neurodivergent traits as strengths, not deficits
  • Building realistic systems that fit your brain
  • Learning self-compassion and emotional regulation tools
  • Practicing boundary setting and asking for accommodations

At TheraHeal, we believe you don’t need to be fixed. You need to be supported.

Try This:
Instead of asking, “How can I focus better?” try asking, “What conditions help me focus naturally?”

You Deserve Understanding

If focus feels hard, if organizing feels impossible, if your mind races and your tasks stall—you’re not lazy or broken.
You might just have a beautiful, buzzing brain that needs different tools and tenderness.

We’re here to walk with you, not reshape you.
