Empowerment & Equity: Why These Themes Matter in Mental Health

8/01/25

At TheraHeal, every month is an opportunity to reflect on the world we live in and the ways it shapes our emotional lives. This August, we’re focusing on two themes that sit at the heart of healing—empowerment and equity.

Mental wellness isn’t just an internal journey. It’s also about the systems we live in, the identities we carry, and the voices we learn to trust, especially our own.

Why Empowerment and Equity?

Empowerment is the process of reconnecting with your sense of agency—your ability to choose, speak, act, and grow. In therapy, it often looks like learning how to trust your instincts again, to advocate for your needs, and to reclaim control over your story.

Equity asks us to look beyond individual healing and into the larger systems that affect mental health—like access to care, cultural safety in therapy, and whether our healing spaces truly reflect and support the communities they serve.

Together, empowerment and equity remind us that healing is both personal and collective.

Honoring Black Business Month

August is National Black Business Month, a time to celebrate the contributions of Black entrepreneurs and creators—and to name the barriers they continue to face.

We honor the legacies of leaders like:

  • Madam C.J. Walker, the first self-made female millionaire in the U.S.
  • Robert F. Smith, philanthropist and investor
  • Pinkie Gordon Lane, poet and educator who uplifted Black voices in business and academia

We also hold space for the modern realities of Black business owners—who often navigate chronic stress, financial pressure, and limited access to mental health support.

If you’re a Black entrepreneur or know someone who is, here are a few resources that center culturally informed care and support:

  • National Black Chamber of Commerce
  • DMV Back Entrepreneurs Network
  • Greater Washington Urban League – Entrepreneurship Center

Reflecting on Women’s Equality Day – August 26

Women’s Equality Day marks the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted American women the right to vote in 1920. But the full story is layered.

The movement was shaped by pioneers like:

  • Sojourner Truth, abolitionist and advocate for both racial and gender equity
  • Ida B. Wells, journalist and suffragist who challenged racism in the women’s movement
  • Alice Paul, who helped organize the Silent Sentinels
  • Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress

Their stories remind us: Equity requires more than access—it requires voice.

At TheraHeal, we believe in helping women reclaim their mental space in a world that too often demands silence, overwork, or perfection. Women’s Equity Day is a moment to pause and ask: Where do I need more room to speak, to rest, to grow?
